Gutka worth ₹40L seized in Nilgiris

Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris police on Thursday seized banned tobacco products worth 40 lakh from a truck coming from Kerala at the Thorapalli checkpost in the Gudalur taluk.
Based on a tip, police conducted vehicle check at the checkpost on Thursday evening. They stopped a truck driven by A Sudhir, 43, from Mannarkadu in Kerala, and found 47 bags of banned tobacco products.
The Gudalur police registered a case under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, the TN Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act, 2002, and Section 328 of the IPC. Sudhir was later remanded in judicial custody.
Coimbatore range DIG, C Vijayakumar, on Friday handed over an appreciation letter to head constable Mahesh, who was instrumental in seizing the items, attached with the Masinagudi station. tnn
