Maharashtra: Army jawan who died in J-K cremated in native Latur
An Indian Army jawan who died earlier this week in Jammu and Kashmir was cremated with full honours in his native village in Latur in Maharashtra on Thursday. Shridhar Chavan (32) of the 120 Engineer Regiment died on Monday in the northern Union Territory, his kin said. Hundreds of people attended the last rites of Chavan at Hadga (Omerga) village during the day, many of whom drew 'rangolis' along the route on which his body was taken for paying of last respects, officials said.

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly cheating people after stealing their ATM cards, police in Thane in Maharashtra said on Thursday. The gang, on the pretext of helping a woman at an ATM kiosk on January 2, stole her card and withdrew Rs 38,500 from her account after memorising her PIN number when she made a cash deposit, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivraj Patil told reporters.

13-year-old girl ends life in Thane housing complex
A 13-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in her home in Maharashtra's Thane city, a police official said on Thursday. She hanged herself on Wednesday night, Inspector (Crime) Vijay Murtadak of Wagle Estate police station said. "The body of the girl has been sent for post mortem.
A case of accidental death has been registered and a probe is underway to find out why she took this extreme step," he said.
Woman seriously injured after being hit by bus in Thane
A woman was seriously injured after a Thane municipal transport bus hit her on Wednesday. The injured woman, identified as Asha More, was crossing the road when the bus ran over her.
As per the CCTV footage, two women were crossing the road when suddenly a TMT (Thane municipal transport) bus came from the other side and hit the woman.This accident happened when the bus driver was trying to take a turn to another route.
Nagpur: Tiger found dead, cause not yet known
A tiger was found dead on Thursday on the Maharashtra side of the Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR), an official said. A press release issued by the office of PTR Field Director A Sreelakshmi said the carcass of the tiger was found floating in a lake and information regarding this was provided by local villagers. The carcass was found in Sillari beat under the Paoni Unified Buffer Range of the reserve spread across Ramtek, Parseoni and Saoner tehsils of Nagpur district in eastern Vidarbha, it said.
Maharashtra reports 18 new Covid-19 cases, one death, 23 recoveries
Maharashtra on Thursday reported 18 Covid-19 cases and one death, which took the tally to 81,36,883 and the toll to 1,48,419, a health official said. The addition to the tally was 21 on Wednesday, he pointed out.
The recovery count increased by 23 in the last 24 hours to touch 79,88,325, leaving the state with an active caseload of 139, he said.As per state health department data, the recovery rate is 98.17 per cent, while 8,60,68,763 coronavirus have been conducted so far, including 12,741 in the last 24 hours.
Thane: Two revenue department staffers held for bribery
Two revenue department staffers were arrested on Thursday in Shahapur in Thane district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe, a Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau official said. The two, attached to the Dhasai office of the revenue department, had sought Rs 60,000 from a man whose mother's land was acquired for a railway project.
"The accused sought this bribe to give a residence certificate to the complainant and send a favourable report to the tehsildar's office. They have been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Shahapur police is probing further," he said.
