7 caught dumping waste into Sidhwan Canal
Ludhiana: In the backdrop of the MC’s Sidhwan Canal cleaning drive, seven residents were caught dumping waste in the part of the canal which has been cleaned. The authorities claimed that the violators were identified and challaned up to Rs 5,000. A few residents were also directed to collect the waste they had dumped into the canal.
MC commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal inspected ongoing work near Bhai Randhir Singh (BRS) Nagar canal bridge on Thursday afternoon. Accompanied by joint commissioner Ankur Mahindroo and zonal commissioner (Zone D) Jasdev Sekhon, Aggarwal directed the staff to expedite the process of cleaning the canal. He also asked them to use more machinery, if required.
Observing that residents were still dumping waste into the canal, Aggarwal urged them to help authorities keep the canal clean.
Warning violators of strict action, Aggarwal said that apart from issuing hefty challans against violators, the civic body would be forced to “publiclly shame” people caught dumping waste into the canal. He said that pictures and videos of violators would be shared on social media networks.
Local bodies minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar started the work to clean the Sidhwan canal from BRS Nagar canal bridge on January 4. The stretch of the canal from Lohara canal bridge to Barewal canal bridge is being cleaned under the project.
