AHMEDABAD: An elderly couple were involved in what police say is likely a murder-suicide episode on Thursday morning at their home in Orchid Exotica Apartments in Makarba, said officers of Sarkhej police.
Police suspect that Kiran Bhow, 73, first stabbed his wife, Usha Bhow, 69, multiple times and then tried to kill himself.
The couple had returned from Fremont, California to Ahmedabad a year ago and were living in their flat in Makarba since October.
At around 6.45am on Thursday, Kiran sent a message to his nephew saying, "suicide" and then went incommunicado.
His nephew was in Paldi so he called the fire brigade and police. Within 15 minutes, Sarkhej police and fire brigade teams reached their flat, B-702, and found the door locked.
Emergency responders broke open the door and found Kiran and Usha lying in pools of blood, with both having multiple wounds.
"Usha was already dead while Kiran was still breathing. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition is said to be critical," said a police officer.
The officer said police found two knives at the crime scene, and they have been sent for forensic examination.
"Prima facie is appears that Kiran first stabbed Usha to death and then stabbed himself," said the police officer. On reasons for the suicide, inspector V J Chavda of Sarkhej police said, "There was no concrete reason, according to the statements of relatives and neighbours. We believe there may have been some sort of domestic dispute which may have led them to take the extreme step."
Another police officer said the couple had lived most of their lives in California and shifted to the city a year ago. They did not have any children."They had first lived in Prahladnagar and recently bought the flat in Makarba," he said.
Cops have also seized their phones for further investigation. "After the FSL report reveals what happened before the death, we will file an appropriate case. At present, a case of accidental death has been filed and if Kiran lives, he will be charged with murder," a senior police officer said.
