4 loan sharks booked for abetting furniture contractor’s suicide
Surat: Even as police have undertaken a statewide drive against loan sharks, it has come to light that a 35-year-old furniture contractor who had ended his life on December 22 had taken the extreme step because of harassment by money lenders. The deceased, Dinaram Jat, was found hanging at his home in Udhna. He had used a plastic rope to hang himself.
On Wednesday, police booked four accused at Udhna police station for abetment of suicide of the man. The four were identified as Amraram alias Amarchand Jat, Antaram Barik, Ramratan Punaram Jat, and Dharmedra alias Munna Ruparam Jat.
Dinaram had left behind a three-page suicide note. He had also shared two videos with his friend from his native village in Rajasthan. He had recorded the videos just before ending his life. In the videos, Dinaram was seen crying relentlessly.
“Dinaram lived alone in the city while his wife, children and mother lived in his native in Nagaur in Rajasthan. Some of the accused are his close family members. So the deceased’s family took time to decide on a police complaint,” said a police officer.
From the suicide note and the narration given in the videos, police found that Dinaram had taken Rs 1.5 lakh from one person but paid Rs 8 lakh to him. In another transaction, he paid Rs 75,000 against Rs 15,000 he had borrowed from another person. The man in the second instance also took a new Apple mobile phone from Dinaram, said police.
“In both these transactions, whether the money was taken as loan is not clear yet. Questioning of the accused can reveal details,” said a police officer.
“The accused are yet to be arrested. While two accused are from Rajasthan, two are from Vapi. Police teams have been sent there to arrest them,” the officer added.
Dinaram had come to the city about a year ago and lived in a rented home. He worked as a contractor for making furniture and employed carpenters.
