Nagpur: Five wagons of a coal-laden rake derailed near Kalamna on Thursday. The 58-wagon rake was heading towards Koradi Thermal Power Plant (KTPS) from Junadih siding in Chhattisgarh.
The derailment occurred around 1.15pm in Kalamna yard. The incident raised a question mark over the safety of trains. The South East Central Railway (SECR) officials claimed passenger trains were not affected as the derailment did not disrupt the main line. However, due to heavy fog coupled with interlocking works across various divisions, mail/express trains were already running 15-20 hours late. SECR officials said the accident relief train (ART) had reached the spot within 30 minutes after the incident.
Divisional railway manager (DRM) Maninder Uppal and senior officials also rushed to monitor the operation to retore the tracks. Work on removing coal from the ill-fated wagons numbering 34 to 37 from the engine was going on till late at night. The officials dispatched 33 wagons to KTPS.
