LUDHIANA: Walking briskly, in a white T shirt and khakhi trousers, with the crowd chanting “Rahul Gandhi zindabaad,” he acknowledges the pressing crowd with a winning smile. He also poses with those approaching him with requests of a selfie. He walks freely, unencumbered by security personnel. It takes a few moments for people to realise that this man is not Rahul Gandhi but Faisal Khan from Meerut, who bears a striking resemblance to him. Khan takes the attention in his stride.
“I am quite used to it. It’s fun watching people’s disbelief when they realise that I am a lookalike of Rahul Gandhi. When I came to join Bharat Jodo Yatra in Delhi, a few cops were confused. For a while, they were wondering why Rahul Gandhi was roaming around without security guards,” he said with a smile as a small crowd of onlookers gathered around him.
Faisal said that his longstanding dream of meeting the Congress leader was realised only on Thursday, when the campaign reached Khanna. Khan was amused by Rahul’s reaction.
“He looked at me surprised and then laughed. He shook hands with me and hugged me, wishing me good luck. It was a lucky day for me,” said Faisal, adding that he attends political rallies of Rahul Gandhi, who he supports.
According to Faisal, he is impressed with Gandhi’s ideology and his campaign, which is about spreading brotherhood and positivity.
