PUNE: Shivajinagar and Pashan continued to record single-digit minimum temperatures on Wednesday, at 8.1°C and 9.6°C, respectively. However, from Thursday, the city will experience a slight uptick in minimum temperatures to 10C in Shivajinagar and 11C in Pashan, a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated.
On Wednesday, Jalgaon and Nasik in central Maharashtra also recorded single-digit minimum temperatures at 7.5°C and 9°C. In Marathwada, Aurangabad recorded 8.2°C, while in Vidarbha, Gondia recorded 9.4°C.
G P Sharma, the president of Skymet Weather Services, noted that both Pune and Nashik cities recorded single-digit minimum temperatures for the third day on Wednesday. "Nashik recorded 9C, 7.6C, 8.7C and Pune recorded 8.1C, 7.4C and 8.6C on January 11, 10 and 9. Maximum temperature hovered slightly above normal, around 30C-32C in both places."
"Minimum temperatures remain 3C to 4C below the normal, due to cold winds during late night and early morning hours," he said, adding that the cold winds have been reaching parts of northern Madhya Maharashtra, causing minimums to drop in Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar.
Under the influence of the shifted anticyclone, leeside of Konkan covering North Madhya Maharashtra has been influenced by dry and cold land winds. "However, reversal of this wind pattern is expected after the passage of the western disturbance affecting north India," Sharma added.
On Wednesday, other locations in Pune recorded double digit minimums, with 11.9C in Lohegaon, 14.8C in Chinchwad, 17.1C in Lavale and 14.8C in Magarpatta.
An IMD update on Wednesday said minimum temperatures have been markedly below normal in some places in Rayalaseema, appreciably below normal in coastal Karnataka, east Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana; and below normal in Vidarbha and Marathwada.
