CHIKKODI (BELAGAVI): Taking a leaf from Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's model, the Congress on Wednesday promised to provide every household in the state with 200 units of free electricity every month in the event of the party coming to power.
The Congress made this pledge as it began its statewide 'Prajadhwani Bus Yatre' in Belagavi ahead of the assembly polls likely to be held in May.
Making the announcement at a party's convention here, KPCC president D K Shivakumar said: "This is our first commitment to the people of Karnataka to brighten every house with light. Therefore, he said they will be calling the scheme 'Gruha Jyothi Yojane'.
Opposition leader in the assembly, Siddaramaiah, said 200 units of free power every month is not limited only to Dalits, backward class people, and minorities, but for every household without any discrimination. The rising prices of essential commodities and the issue of unemployment, especially among the middle class and poor, got the party thinking, it said, adding with free power people can save on essentials like food, education and healthcare.
“Karnataka urgently wants a government that thinks about public welfare and well-being,” Shivakumar said. Pointing out that the BJP had promised to provide 10 hours of three-phase power but failed to deliver, Siddaramaiah said, “We (Congress) had promised to provide it (three-phase power) for seven hours and fulfilled our commitment while in power last time (2013–2018). Now we have said 200 units of free power, and we will fulfil this promise at any cost.”
