Margao: Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council Damodar Shirodkar said that to rid the town of garbage black spots, the municipality has decided to impose hefty fines on those found dumping waste in the open.
Shirodkar said that the MMC has decided to levy a fine of Rs 10,000 on those found transporting garbage on two wheelers and Rs 15,000 to 20,000 for those in four-wheelers.
Shirodkar hopes the move will deter people from dumping waste in open spaces, and help eliminate black spots.
Shirodkar on Tuesday led a team of municipal employees in conducting an inspection of various black spots across the town.
The chairperson said that the municipality would soon launch a drive to remove these black spots and beautify open spaces.
The move comes in the backdrop of a large number of complaints from residents about stench emanating from open spaces where people have been dumping waste. “I have seen people coming in cars and throwing garbage from their vehicles. This has resulted in many new black spots,” Shirodkar said.
The chairperson directed the municipality’s sanitation workers to clean the garbage accumulated in open spaces.
“So far, we have inspected five wards, the remaining 20 wards will be inspected soon to identify and clear the black spots,” Shirodkar said.
Earlier, following complaints of garbage being dumped along the stretch from Aquem fire brigade to the power house ring road, the road was closed for the public at night on the orders of the district administration. This has subjected people to a lot of inconvenience.
“People criticise us either way. If we don’t act, people criticise us for inaction against garbage black spots, and when we have now closed the road for vehicles to prevent dumping, they are criticising us for that too. What are we supposed to do?” Shirodkar said.
