The Uttarkhand government on Wednesday announced Rs 1.5 lakh interim relief to affected families who have been shifted to safer locations after land subsidence in Joshimath led to houses and establishments to develop cracks. Secretary to Uttarakhand chief minister R Meenakshi Sundaram said, "Each family will be given immediate interim assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh. Till now, cracks have been noticed in 723 buildings." Meanwhile, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami's office said that the local people who have been affected by the landslide will be compensated at the market rate. The Uttarakhand government will carry out a technical and scientific study of all cities and towns in the hills and construction will be stopped in places found to have exceeded the carrying capacity, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said. NCMC meets on Joshimath

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met in New Delhi on Tuesday under cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba to review the situation in Joshimath and measures taken by state and central authorities for rehabilitation of the affected families.

The Uttarakhand chief secretary briefed the meeting, which was also attended by the Union home secretary and secretaries of border management division (under MHA) and the ministries of power, I&B, water resources and mines, besides members of National Disaster Management Authority, chief of integrated defence staff, secretary to Isro chairman and others.

Officials from Centre call on Uttarakhand CM to assess situation in Joshimath

Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami here to assess the situation in Joshimath and underlined the need for ascertaining the location of underground water accumulation in the subsidence zone. Water accumulation under the ground in the affected area is considered to be in Joshimath but the source of the water is yet to be ascertained.The central team of officials also said a geological survey of the areas identified for the rehabilitation of the affected people should be carried out.
