CHENNAI: The Coimbatore Corporation has announced 30 collection points in various parts of the city to receive discarded waste to encourage people to hand it over to the civic body instead of burning them during Bhogi festival on January 14.
Corporation commissioner M Prathap has appealed to the residents to hand over the waste to the corporation employees instead of burning it. He said that smoke emanating from burning can cause harm to environment and put elderly people in distress.
The waste received at the collection points would be segregated and disposed accordingly, he said.
Following are the collection points set up by the corporation.
East Zone- Sitra Corner, Kalapatti Four Road Junction, sanitary inspector office at Chandra Gandhi Nagar, Varadharajapuram Marriage Hall and Singanallur Bus Terminal and Farmers Market in Singanallur.
West Zone- Panaimarathur garbage recycling unit, sanitary inspector office in Vadavalli, Shastri Ground in RS Puram and sanitary inspector office in Kavundampalayam.
North Zone- micro composting yard in Thudiyalur Shanty, sanitary inspector office in Saravanampatti, sanitary inspector office in Chinnavedampatti, sanitary inspector office in KRG Nagar in Ganapathy, micro composting centre in Ramasamy Nagar, ward office in Kavundampalayam and garbage recycling unit in Vilankurichi.
South Zone- Garbage recycling unit in Sokkampudur, Garbage recycling unit in Pullukadu, sanitary inspector office in Kovaipudur and Tharun Residency in Ganesapuram.
Central Zone- Gandhipuram Bus Terminal, Central Bus Terminal, sanitary inspector office in Cross Cut Road, TK Market, Ukkadam Market, Therthidal in Raja Street, near public toilet in Chetty Street, Ukkadam Bus Terminal and near Railway Junction.
The collection points will function till the end of Bhogi festival. The corporation employees have been instructed to create awareness about the collection points to the residents. The councillors have also been asked to play a role in reaching out to the residents.
The commissioner along with East zone chairman Ilakummi Izhamselvi distributed pamphlets to create awareness on the collection points in Balan Nagar in ward 52.
