Surat: In a drive to clear important roads in the city that started on January 5, a total of 2.31 lakh sq metre area was cleared of encroachments along 35 roads in the city by the Surat Municipal Corporation in the first phase.
SMC team comprising more than 150 officials and staff joined the drive in which areas in East zone A and B, Limbayat, South West and others were reclaimed.
On Tuesday, the road connecting the Silent Zone to Dumas Road was cleared off encroachments restoring the 18m width of the road. Sachin Magdalla highway to Vesu Canal road too was cleared from encroachments which will now provide one more entry to the city from the highway.
Service road between Sosyo Circle to Kharwarnagar Junction was cleared for better and smoother traffic movement.
Immediately after clearing the road from encroachments, the SMC started work to construct a road to prevent the land from being re-encroached upon.
“We have already started work to construct a road on the road. This demolition and process to clear the road is the first phase of the project. Gradually more areas will be cleared to facilitate citizens for better traffic movement,” said Shalini Agarwal, city municipal commissioner.
Construction work on 16 roads has already been started. Majority of the roads have remained encroached for the past many years due to no timely actions by civic officials.
