Kolkata: The Kolkata Police STF has arrested an active operative of terror outfit IS from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh. The accused, Abdul Raqib Qureshi (33) had close links with the Howrah module of IS led by Md Saddam, an MTech, who had been arrested earlier.
Saddam had visited Qureshi in Madhya Pradesh earlier.
“Qureshi was held during a raid in the Kotwali area of Khandwa on Monday evening. We are bringing him to Kolkata on transit remand,” said DC (STF) Harikrishna Pai.
STF sources said initial probe so far has revealed that Qureshi was a former member of the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), member and was responsible for arranging funds and weapons for the two arrested IS operatives from Howrah.
“His association with the two arrested terrorists points to his involvement with the terror outfit. He has been in touch with the Howrah module through various social media apps and was being readied to be sent to Syria by Saddam. He has a history of association with fundamentalist organisations,” the officer said.
Sources said Saddam has told interrogators that he had contacted Qureshi for arms using social media. “We are trying to retrieve those chats. A number of old cases link Qureshi with illegal gun running, our local sources have told us. However, we have sought more details about him from MP Police and a few central agencies in this regard,” stated a STF source.
