Setback to Shikshan Manch as guv picks RSS & ABVP members for Senate
Nagpur: In yet another setback to Shikshan Manch, Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has nominated 10 members to the Nagpur University Senate, but most of them are from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

This is the second setback to the RSS offshoot having its stronghold over NU’s statutory bodies and administration as well.
Earlier, Koshyari had nominated National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) director Atul Vaidya and former ABVP senior functionary to the Management Council. It was an unexpected move for many as Shikshan Manch coordinator Kalpana Pande was eyeing the seat and was tipped by many in the university as a favourite..

Despite being an RSS offshoot, differences cropped up between the ABVP and Manch over the style of functioning of the vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari purportedly on the diktats of Pande, who plays a king-maker, say NU officials.
ABVP office-bearers were agitated after the VC, reportedly on the orders of Pande, had tried to suppress the harassment complaint filed against Hindi department head by two PhD students, including a handicapped. The issue was raised by ABVP and BJYM office-bearers in the Senate meeting in March last year.It was on Pande’s directives that a former judge of her choice was appointed to probe the charges, followed by a clean chit to the accused, claim sources..

Thereafter, NU even lodged a police complaint against ABVP members who had raised the issue, but later withdrew it after facing flak from BJP top bosses.
Pande was also mired in a controversy and received flak in NU circles over organizing a haldi-kumkum event during the Indian Science Congress. Until then, her position was strong following Shikshan Manch’s impressive tally in the recent Senate elections where the outfit bagged the highest number of seats despite traditional rivals — Secular Panel and Young Teachers Association (YTA) — joining hands.
Pande denied all charges against her while speaking to TOI regarding the ISC controversy and allegations of her growing interference in NU affairs. She refused to pick up TOI’s calls and also did not respond to text messages.
