BENGALURU: A 47-year-old businessman from Basaveshwaranagar, west Bengaluru, allegedly lost Rs 80,430 to cybercriminals after he responded to an order for diapers on January 2.
BR Mahesh, a distributor of diapers in the city, told police a person identifying himself as Amith Kumar, called him on January 2. Kumar claimed he was working in an army school and wanted to buy diapers for students. He sent fake ID and Aadhaar cards to gain Mahesh’s trust.
The miscreant told Mahesh he would make advance payment for the purchase and send the particulars, including the number of diapers and other details later.
Mahesh received a QR code within a few minutes from the suspect. He thought he would get an advance payment if he scanned the code, and did the same. Later, Mahesh came to know that Rs 80,430 was debited from his bank account, and the money was transferred to an account belonging to one Pooja Kuldeep Patil.
