SURAT: A five-year-old girl suffered severe injuries in her face when a rabid dog bit her on the face in Fulpada area of the city on Saturday. The dog bit her right cheek and continued to attack her till the girl was rescued by her family member. The incident came to light after CCTV footage of the incident went viral.
The girl was going to play with other children in front of her house at Hans Society when the dog passing nearby attacked her. A woman from the girl's family came out with a glass of water and threw the water at the dog, making it run away. As the dog moved away, the girl was picked up by the woman. The footage shows the dog trying to attack the woman as well.
The dog was caught by a team of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and within a short period the dog died, officials said. "The dog was rabid, hence it died soon after it was caught," said a health official. The girl was given vaccines to prevent rabies infection.
"It seems from the video that the minor chased the dog because of which the dog attacked her. Apart from the rabid dog, SMC team caught a few other dogs as well," said a SMC officer.
The minor lives with her uncle who runs a sweet shop in Varachha. "It looks the girl was going behind the dog but actually she was going to play. It is seen in the video that she waited for the dog to go away, after which she came out of our home," said her uncle. "For the first time, such an incident has happened in our society,'' her uncle added.
