Maharashtra records 24 new Covid-19 cases, zero fatalities

Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 24 new coronavirus infections and zero pandemic-related deaths. There are 146 active cases in the state, the health department said in a release. The state's Covid-19 caseload rose to 81,36,844 while the death toll reached 1,48,418. (PTI)

Two boys drown at Raigad beach, three rescued

Two 15-year-old boys drowned while swimming in the sea during a school picnic at a beach in Maharashtra Raigad district, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday at Kashid beach in Murud taluka, where a group of 70 students and five teachers from a school in Aurangabad had arrived for a picnic, an official said. (PTI)

A 49-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbai's Vile Parle, was gang-raped by her friends in Ahmedabad. Two accused were arrested of whom accused Lalsaheb knew the woman. Efforts are under way to nab those absconding, said Mumbai Police.

The Bombay high court on Tuesday rapped the Maharashtra government for its uncertainty on framing a policy permitting bike taxis in the state, and said it has to clarify its stand one way or the other. Maharashtra political crisis: SC to commence hearing pleas on Feb 14

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it will commence hearing on February 14 on pleas related to the Maharashtra political crisis triggered by the Shiv Sena's division. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was told by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena, that he will will seek reference of the cases to a seven-judge bench to have a re-look of a 2016 judgment on powers of assembly speakers to deal with disqualification pleas.

After Aaditya, Congress, SP join opposition chorus against racecourse shift

A day after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former minister Aaditya Thackeray slammed the plan to shift the sprawling 226-acre Mahalaxmi Racecourse to a private land near Mulund dumping ground, Congress and Samajwadi Party too hit out at the state government and the BMC over the proposal. The BMC plans to convert the heritage racecourse ground in south Mumbai into a theme park. Aaditya, an MLA from Worli assembly constituency in which the racecourse is located, on Monday reiterated the space was an integral part of Mumbai. Aaditya tweeted: “Khoke Sarkar now wants to sell the race course! The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is an integral urban open space of Mumbai and part of every Mumbaikar’s life. Uddhav Thackeray ji had proposed a park like “The Hyde Park” where everyone would have free, open access to a green open space, without any construction. . . We also hear that commercial interests are involved in Mulund’s proposed racecourse at taxpayers expense. ”

12-year-old boy falls off train. Saved by Mumbai cop, but loses a leg

A fall from a local train between Bandra and Mahim stations resulted in a 12-year-old boy eventually losing his leg knee down. His life was saved by an alert police constable who spotted him and rushed him to hospital. The boy, Farhan Ansari, is recuperating at Sion Hospital.
