Nurses at two of New York City's largest hospitals went on strike Monday in a dispute over pay and staffing levels after a weekend of negotiations did not produce a deal for a new contract.
The walkout involves as many as 3,500 nurses at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and about 3,600 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Patients are likely to see disruptions in care such as emergency room visits and childbirth.

Mumbai sees four COVID-19 cases, no death; active tally 31 as two recover
Mumbai on Monday reported four COVID-19 cases, which took the tally here to 11,55,161, while the death toll stood unchanged at 19,746, a civic official said.
On Sunday, the addition to the tally was four, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official pointed out.
Only one out of the four cases recorded during the day was symptomatic, he added.
COVID-19 clean slate: No case, death, recovery reported in Chhattisgarh
No COVID-19 case or death was reported in Chhattisgarh on Monday, which kept the tally and toll unchanged at 11,77,760 and 14,146, respectively, a health official said.
There was no rise in the recovery count either, which stood at 11,63,612, leaving the state with two active cases, he added.
So far, 1,88,51,483 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the state, including 1,746 during the day, a government release said.
New Omicron variants not causing spike or mortality of cases
The Union Health Ministry on Monday said that sequencing of samples from Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) sentinel sites have referred that all the omicron variants like BA.2 and its sub-lineages including BA.2.75, XBB (37), BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 (5) are present in India but none of them has caused a rise in mortality nor rise in transmission in the areas where these variants were detected.
The Health Ministry further stated that between December 29 and January 7 Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP), sentinel sites referred 324 Covid-19 positive samples for sequencing to 22 INSACOG labs.
