Sedition case: Delhi LG grants permission to prosecute JNU student leader Shehla Rashid
Shehla Rashid is accused of making two tweets about the Indian Army aimed at promoting enmity between different groups.
NEW DELHI: LG VK Saxena on Tuesday granted permission to prosecute ex-vice president of JNU students union and member of AISA, Shehla Rashid, in connection with a 2019 sedition case.
Rashid is accused of making two tweets about the Indian Army aimed at promoting enmity between different groups and indulging in acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.
The case was filed by Delhi Police Special Cell following a complaint by an advocate named Alakh Alok Srivastava.
In his complaint, Srivastava had said Rashid's allegations were baseless.
Srivastava had accused Rashid of "deliberately spreading fake news with the intention to incite violence in the country" and maligning the image of the Indian Army.
Police had registered an FIR under sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of IPC.
