MADURAI: Various documents, saris and dhotis kept for distribution as part of the Pongal gift hampers were damaged in a fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday at the Madurai district collectorate.
According to sources, the fire broke out past midnight in one of the old buildings. The building where the fire occurred was the office of the district supply officer. As the fire spread, security personnel at the collectorate alerted the fire and rescue services department.
Tallakulam fire and rescue services department personnel reached the spot. Four fire tenders were used to douse the fire. After around three hours, the fire was brought under control. No one was injured in the incident.
The fire, however, destroyed various documents as well as the stocked bundles of saris and dhotis. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. It is suspected that the fire could have occurred due to an electrical issue.
