COIMBATORE: The Podanur police have registered a case against an unidentified man for cheating an elderly woman of four sovereigns of gold chain.
Police said V Nanjammal, 72, from Bodipalayam near Madukkarai runs a grocery shop. “On Saturday at 8am, she was standing at the Ukkadam bus stand to board a bus to Bodipalayam. An unidentified man approached the woman and offered to drop her. Believing his words, she got on the bike,” said a police officer.
“On the way, he told her that he could help her get government pension and asked her to remove her gold chain. Soon, she removed the chain, wrapped it in a piece of paper and handed it over to the man while he took her picture. Then he gave back the wrapped paper and told her he would get a stamp paper and left her near a private hospital on Pollachi Road.
When he failed to return, she opened the wrapped paper and found small stones in it,” the police officer said. Based on her complaint, police registered a case against him under sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is on.
