In line with the ongoing strikes in the UK, the teachers, who are with a number of unions in Scotland, have also been striking to voice their concern over many issues.

In recent months, the UK has witnessed walkouts from many kinds of workers, affecting everything from the trains and roads to ambulance services.

When will the teachers strike in Scotland?
In Scotland, teachers will be on strike on Tuesday (January 10) and Wednesday (January 11).

On both dates, the strikes will be carried out by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) union and the NASUWT union.

The staff of primary schools will hit the picket line on Tuesday. The walkouts on Wednesday will be held by the staff of secondary schools.

On January 11, the teachers belonging to the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association (SSTA) will also join the picket line.

The EIS will also hold 16 days of action in local areas, from January 16 to February 6.

Why are strikes happening?

The teachers have been holding strikes to raise pay issues.

In November 2022, the strikes were organised previously. It had led to the closure of every state school in Scotland, said the EIS.

The next strike dates were announced by the unions after a pay offer from the government and Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) could not be agreed upon.

NASUWT has already made the announcement that it is looking for a ‘fully funded 12% pay award for 2022/23’. The current pay offer ‘amounts to a further real-terms pay cut, following a decade of pay freezes and below-inflation pay awards’, it has said.

About the strikes, General secretary Dr Patrick Roach said that the members are not prepared to stand by as their pay shrinks and their living costs increase. The government and employers will need to come up with a substantially improved pay offer if they look to put an end to this dispute.
