CHENNAI: Two youths, one of them a minor, were nabbed on Sunday for trying to make country bombs at a rented house in Potheri in Chengalpet district, police said. .
Six months ago, the two youths had come looking for the house claiming that they were college students from Madurai. The landlord did not doubt their claims as a lot of students from a private university in Kattankulathur rent homes and apartments in Potheri, police said .
Over a period of time, the neighbours grew suspicious as the two students came in to stay only during night and stayed awake for long with their lights switched on. Locals tipped police about suspicious activity in the house.
Based on the information, a team from Maraimalai Nagar police raided the house on Sunday. Noticing police presence, two youths who were in the house managed to scale the compound wall and fled. Police managed to nab the other two youths from the house, and confiscted five country bombs being made by the gang and raw materials, apart from marijuana sachets.
One of the youth was identified as Praveen Kumar, 23, of Otteri near Vandalur, while the other person is a 16-year-old from the same locality. The gang of four had rented the house to make country bombs using which they had planned to commit a murder. They told police that they were getting trained to kill a gangster, the identity of whom they did not reveal.
Police are yet to find out the source of the raw materials and the networking working behind it. Kumar was remanded in judicial custody, while the minor boy was sent to a government home. A hunt is on for the two other gang members.
