Indonesia has been rattled by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, according to a Reuters report. Tsunami warnings were issued for Indonesia as tremors were felt in Australia's Northern Territory, including Darwin.

The earthquake struck Tanimbar region in Indonesia, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The quake was at a depth of 97 kilometers (60.27 miles) below the earth's surface, EMSC said.

The earthquake hit at 3.17 am local time. The quake occurred northeast of the small Asian country of East Timor and centred in the Banda Sea.

On Saturday morning, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Kathmandu Valley and other areas of central Nepal.


While some reports tremors felt for four minutes in Darwin, authorities are yet to issue a Tsunami warning for Australia. There is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, said the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre.

Details about damage are yet to be ascertained.

This came a day after the US had issued a tsunami warning for Vanuatu after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean.
