Ulhasnagar police recover stolen idol of Baba Saheb Ambedkar
On Friday, the police brought the idol safely to Ulhasnagar.
ULHASNAGAR: The central police in Ulhasnagar have recovered the stolen idol of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Ambedkar and arrested the accused from West Bengal.
On December 26, an unknown accused had stolen panch dhatu made idol of Ambedkar from Jetvan Buddha Vihar situated in Khemani area in Ulhasnagar. After the idol was stolen, the locals had demanded police to arrest the accused and get idol back soon else they threatened to hold protests.
Looking at situation, the local Ulhasnagar police station's senior police inspector Dilip Fulpagare formed a team who checked into CCTV footage and identified the accused Jagnoom Mandal living in Hanuman Nagar area in Ulhasnagar.
The police later learnt that Mandal had fled to his native place in West Bengal and one team was sent their who arrested the accused and finally recovered stolen idol.
Motichand Rathod, assistant commissioner of police, said, "The probe revealed Mandal stole the idol with an intention to sell it to make money. He tried to sell it at many scrap shops but no one purchased it."
On Friday, the police brought the idol safely to Ulhasnagar. The police handed the idol to a monk who again installed idol at Buddha Vihar.
