Gadvasu gets new centre for fisheries
Ludhiana: Jatindra Nath Swain, secretary at department of fisheries, Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, inaugurated a Capacity-building Resource Centre for intensive aquaculture technologies developed at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu).
The centre was built under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), and department’s joint secretary Sagar Mehra, varsity’s vice-chancellor Inderjeet Singh, and Punjab fisheries director and warden Jasvir Singh, were also present at the event.
The Centre, established with a budget of Rs 139 lakh, will serve as a prospective resource for demonstration, capacity-building and innovative R&D for upscaling intensive aquaculture technologies like recirculatory and biofloc-based systems, as per regional needs and climate, the VC informed. He added that such water-saving technologies were essentially required for fulfilling production targets for food security and economic growth of the nation.
Sagar Mehra briefed that Gadvasu was the first university to receive 100% funding for the said project under PMMSY, and the Union scheme was being visualized as a catalyst to boost ‘blue revolution’ in the region.
Extending warm compliments to the university on establishing the centre successfully, Swain said that aspiring entrepreneurs of the region, looking forward to adopting new and advanced technologies, would be benefited with the facility as it would offer them hands-on training and incubation opportunities.
