MUMBAI: Gutka baron JM Joshi, co-accused Jamiruddin Ansari, and accused Farukh Mansuri, were convicted in a case where they were accused of being part of an organised crime syndicate that was setting up gutka manufacturing units in Karachi for gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees.
The trio were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for offences under the stringent MCOCA.
In 2018, the special MCOCA court, while framing charges against Joshi and Jamiruddin Ansari had said the duo, along with now-dead accused gutka baron RM Dhariwal and absconding accused
Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, Anees Ibrahim Kaskar, Abdul Antulay, Salim Shaikh and Mohammed Mansuri, were part of the conspiracy.
The court held that as part of the conspiracy, there was a need for five gutka pouch packaging machines.
The court had then said Joshi, in consequence of a settlement of a financial dispute with Dhariwal, had taken responsibility to assist them with the installation of machinery to bring the plant into operation.
Further framing charges against Joshi for kidnapping, the court said in connivance with other accused, he kidnapped Biju Kollacherry from India to Karachi via Dubai and facilitated his concealment and confinement.
The court had stated the accused had extorted from the complainant by forcibly procuring and sending five machines valued at Rs 2.64 lakh for the intended gutka factory and to take all steps to send them to Pakistan via Dubai.
The court said they were “members and co-conspirators of the organised crime syndicate headed by Dawood Ibrahim".
