Guwahati: Dense fog has engulfed Assam and
Tripura, even as the entire northeast is reeling from bone-chilling cold ahead of Magh Bihu.
Mercury dropped to two degrees Celsius at Barapani near Shillong on Sunday, which was the lowest minimum temperature recorded by the IMD in the region in the last 24 hours.
After Arunachal Pradesh, several places in Nagaland have been witnessing snowfall since the first week of January. In Kiphire district, bordering Myanmar, the snow-covered mountainous range was a sight to behold for tourists. “Many tourists are coming to watch the snowfall at Mount Saramati bordering Nagaland and Myanmar. The snow cover is not thick, so road connectivity has not been disrupted,” Pewezo Khalo, a senior government official, said.
The IMD has warned of dense fog at isolated pockets over western and southern Assam, Meghalaya,
Mizoram and Tripura during the next two to three days. There was, however, little impact on road transport during foggy weather, transporters said. There were no reports of delay or diversion in train and flight operations to and from Guwahati too.
Meanwhile, cold wave swept four of the northeastern state capitals with the minimum temperature continuing to be below 10 degrees Celsius.
