Heavy fog in Delhi on Monday delayed flights, and a cold wave forced authorities to defer school reopenings a week, as visibility fell and cars drove with their hazard lights on. Delhi saw cold wave conditions for the fifth consecutive day even as very dense fog lowered visibility to just 25 metres, hitting road, rail and air traffic movement, officials said.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in the Indian capital asked flyers to contact their airlines for updates on flights. Due to low visibility at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi a flight of Air India Express from Sharjah to Delhi has been diverted to Jaipur.Around 15 flights have been delayed due to ongoing weather conditions, news agency ANI quoted an official at Delhi airport as saying.

Data from private flight trackers showed several flights had been delayed, Reuters said. Around 29 trains have been delayed by two to five hours due to foggy weather, a railway official told PTI.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast "dense to very dense fog conditions" over many parts of Delhi and northern and eastern states, such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, until Tuesday.

It warned that air, road and train traffic could be affected in the two days and people could suffer from lung-related health problems. It also said power lines could trip in areas with dense fog.

Delhi, a city of 20 million people, has already extended winter holidays for many schools by a week. Many private schools were to reopen on Monday.

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius on Monday. The lowest for Sunday was 3.8 degrees Celsius, which the IMD said was 3 degrees below normal for this time of year.

A cold wave is declared in the plains of India when the minimum temperature dips to 4 degrees Celsius or falls 4.5 degrees below normal to 10 degrees Celsius or below.

Satellite images showed a fog layer extending from Punjab and adjoining northwest Rajasthan to Bihar across Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Cold wave conditions persisted in the capital for the fifth day on the trot though minimum temperatures rose marginally.

The Safdarjung observatory logged a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius as against 1.9 degrees on Sunday.

The weather stations at Lodhi Road, Ayanagar and Ridge recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees, 3.2 degrees and 3.3 degrees.
