After chilly weekend, cold will intensify Monday blues
Ludhiana: The city experienced a chilly weekend on Sunday, in line with the red alert sounded by the meteorological department. The department has predicted cold to severe cold on Monday as well.
According to the department, maximum (day) temperature in the city on Sunday was recorded at 15.1 degrees Celsius, which is 2.7 degrees below normal but 0.5 degrees more than the day before.
On Friday, Ludhiana witnessed the coldest day in January since 2013 (when day temperature was recorded at 8.5 degrees Celsius). Day temperature on Friday was recorded at 9.2 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, minimum (night) temperature in Ludhiana on Sunday was recorded at 5.3 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degree below normal and 1 degree less than a day before.
On December 18, 2022, Ludhiana recorded the lowest night temperature at 3.8 degrees Celsius in the season.
Meanwhile, dense fog in the morning reduced visibility to just 50 metres at 8.30 am on Sunday. It increased to 400 metres at 11.30am when the fog became moderate.
The Chandigarh meteorological department has sounded the orange alert for Ludhiana on Monday, which means that the city is expected to experience cold to severe cold and dense to very dense fog. Dense fog has been predicted on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.
With the festival of Lohri around the corner, residents hope that celebrations, replete with bonfires, give way to warmer days ahead.
Many also expressed concern about people forced to live out on streets or in flimsy shelters in such weather. A few groups have been going out and distribiuting quilts to people.
