NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a notorious criminal from Haryana's Mewat in connection with a Rs 36-lakh heist from an ATM.
The suspect was identified as Iqbal alias Balli from Nuh, Haryana. Iqbal and his gang are allegedly involved in the theft of over 7,000 cattle in the last few years, police said.
According to deputy commissioner of police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah, the accused is involved in over a dozen cases of ATM break-ins, "cattle-lifting", and attacks on policemen.
"He belongs to a gang that has no fear of the law. They even attacked a team of Delhi crime branch with weapons and stones in 2013," Kushwah said.
The accused was arrested by a team, comprising inspectors Satish Rana and Manoj, who were chasing the suspect for about a month. The cops received a tip-off that the accused had committed a theft at an ATM that had cash worth around Rs 36 lakh in Bharatpur, Rajasthan and was planning to commit a similar crime in Delhi.
Hence, they laid a trap and apprehended the accused from the Noida-Delhi link road on January 7.
A pistol and cartridges were seized from him. During interrogation, Iqbal told police that he is married and has a 19-year-old son. He started his criminal activities in 2000 and deals in the sale of stolen cattle for slaughter.
