Girl dies in Hong Kong, family seeks govt help to get body back
Ludhiana: A family from a Jagraon village is struggling to come to terms with the death of their daughter in Hong Kong. They spoke to her barely a few hours ago. The next call they received was the one informing them that she had fallen to death from the 13th floor of the skyscraper she worked in as domestic help. For the devastated family, closure is a remote possibility. With the body not here, they have not even had a chance to bid her farewell.
The victim, Kiranjot Kaur, 22, was cleaning the glass pane of the flat when she slipped and fell. Many villagers have requested the Indian embassy to help the family get her body home and secure compensation. Her mother Jasvir Kaur is a panchayat member, her father Jaswant Singh works as a labourer and her elder brother Harwinder Singh works in a private firm. Her elder sister Sukhdeep Kaur is married and lives in the neighbouring Akhara village.
Harwinder Singh, elder brother of the deceased said that his sister, who had cleared Class XII, went to Hong Kong five months ago and worked as domestic help there. She was unmarried. He said that authorities informed them that she slipped and fell from the 13th floor of the building while cleaning the glass. He added that police was investigating the matter and the process of bringing the body back to India was expected to start soon.
Kamalpreet Singh, her brother-in-law said that Kiranjot went to Hong Kong because she could not find work here and the family was in dire financial straits. According to him, they were told that she was cleaning the glass of the apartment outside at around 5pm and was not wearing the safety belt.
Meanwhile, villagers wants the Indian Embassy in Hong Kong to help the family of the deceased. Gurmail Singh, husband of village sarpanch Baljinder Kaur said that they requested the Indian High Commission in Hong Kong to help get the body to India and demanded that the family get due compensation and insurance claim. He added that the family with which the girl worked as domestic help was also from the same village and lived in Hong Kong.
