Centre to House panel: 'Inequitable representation of backward, minority communities in higher judiciary'

Amid the ongoing tussle between the Centre and judiciary over the appointment of judges, the Centre has said that social diversity is missing in the higher judiciary. In a presentation to the parliamentary standing committee on law and justice, the Union law ministry informed that 79% of all high court judges appointed in the past five years (2018 to 2022) are from upper castes. It said that there is an inequitable representation of backward and minority communities in higher judiciary.
