PHAGWARA: A police constable was shot dead late on Sunday night by a gang of car robbers who were being chased by Phagwara police and were cornered near Bara Pind in Phillaur sub-division.
A Creta car was taken away on gun point from Urban Estate area by four armed robbers. Avtar Singh, who was driving the car, alerted the police and police teams started chasing the robbers while tracking GPS of the car and tracked them to Bara Pind.
However, the cornered robbers shot at the police and constable Kuldeep Singh Bajwa received a bullet.
“He received a bullet in his abdomen which led to excessive bleeding and he succumbed to his injury at a private hospital,” said Phagwara SP Mukhtiar Rai. He said that quite a few bullets were fired by the criminals and one hit the constable.
“After Urban Estate police chowki in-charge got the information of the car-jacking he and city police station SHO started the chase and soon traced their location,” SP said.
It is learnt that police apprehended the accused but police officials are yet to confirm the details.
It is second incident in around a month in Doaba region where a police personnel has been gunned down by criminals.
Earlier on December 7, one constable Mandeep Singh was shot dead along with businessman Bhupinder singh ‘Timmy’ Chawla after latter had received extortion calls.
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted that Punjab government would make ex-gratia grant of Rs 1 crore and another Rs 1 crore insurance payment would be made by HDFC Bank to the family of the deceased constable.
