Thane: A 53-year-old autorickshaw driver was killed in a hit-and-run incident in the wee hours of Saturday on Ghodbunder road, the police informed.
According to the Kapurbawdi police station that registered a case, the incident occurred around 3.30am when the deceased identified as Sopan Kalbhor, a resident of Janaki nagar in Manisha nagar, Kalwa, was driving his autorickshaw on the service road towards Thane from Manpada after dropping off a passenger.
A Sedan bearing a Mumbai registration number that was cruising in the same direction rammed into Kalbhor’s autorickshaw from behind, following which, it tumbled multiple times, informed Avinash Sawant, chief at the regional disaster management cell in Thane.
The police further informed that the Sedan’s driver fled after the mishap, leaving the car behind at the spot. Meanwhile, the injured autorickshaw driver was rushed to the local hospital by fellow motorists, who also alerted the police.
“The victim was rushed to a local hospital and then to the government facility where he was declared dead,” said a police official.
A case has been registered by the Kapurbawdi police against the car driver under sections 304 b, 279, 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and under sections 134 A, B and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
