GURUGRAM: Traffic movement in and around Atul Kataria Chowk is now expected to become smoother, with both the flyover and the underpass, which were under construction at the busy junction as part of a traffic improvement project, fully opened to commuters on Saturday.
One carriageway of the 731m-long, four-lane flyover for traffic movement from the Gurugram bus stand to Kapashera was opened in May last year.
Now, the entire project, including the flyover and the 642.3m, four-lane, bi-directional underpass, has been made operational.
Work on the project began in July 2019 with the initial deadline of November that year. But the project missed several deadlines for several reasons, including Covid-19 and the consequent lockdowns and restrictions on construction due to high pollution in winter. The project was executed by the public works department (PWD) on behalf of the GMDA.
The junction is critical to commuters since vehicles moving from areas with a high footfall like Huda City Centre metro station, the Gurugram bus stand, the railway station and Sheetla Mata Mandir intersect here.
Officials from the metropolitan authority said the opening of this junction would provide much relief to commuters travelling on this central intersection of the city. "Atul Kataria Chowk is one of the busiest intersections and sees heavy volume of traffic. The revamped chowk will ease traffic congestion and streamline vehicular flow," said GMDA's CEO Sudhir Rajpal.
Commuters also welcomed the opening of the underpass and the flyover. "Traffic at Atul Kataria Chowk has been a nightmare for residents and commuters of the city. Now, we can all heave a sigh of relief," said Sushant Sharma, a resident of Sector 14.
Approved in the first authority meet of the GMDA in 2018, work on the project to decongest it had started in November 2019, but was repeatedly delayed due to complications in shifting utilities from the site, the Covid-19 pandemic, and bans on construction to check pollution during winter months.
