Get to know Avery Wolters, the Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week

A move up to the MAC Blue presented new challenges for the Marysville girls basketball team.
But with a 3-0 record in conference play, the Vikings have adjusted quite well. And Avery Wolters is one of the main reasons why.
The junior was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 26-31. She scored a game-high 23 points in Marysville's 40-38 overtime win against Sanford Meridian on Dec. 30.
The Times Herald recently caught up with Wolters to learn more about her.
Times Herald: How long have you been playing basketball?
Avery Wolters: I've been playing basketball for quite awhile. I started early in elementary school, maybe third grade.
TH: What makes you such a talented player?
Wolters: I feel like my hard work and determination have really helped me reach another level. Our team does a good job of working together and I've had a lot of coaches tell me I've been very coachable. So that way, I can pick up on things easier and put them into games faster.
TH: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Wolters: I probably have to say Michael Jordan, which seems a little basic. But his intensity in the game was unmatched and his heart out there was just so insane. Everything about his game was so amazing. He could hit 3s, he was dunking on people — I just love every aspect of his game.
TH: What do you enjoy doing outside of playing basketball?
Wolters: Besides basketball, I either have softball or volleyball going on. But outside of that, I really enjoy hanging out with my friends. One craft that I like doing is baking. It's peaceful and delicious, too. I'll make two-tier cakes, decorate them or make them for a friend's birthday — stuff like that.
TH: What goal do you have for this season?
Wolters: I really hope our whole team can continue to grow and get better. Because we lost a lot of seniors last year. But as the games are progressing, we're continuously getting better. I'm just excited to see how we compete with more teams in a higher league.
