Ranchi: Tribal groups, including the ruling party JMM, took a strong exception to Union home minister Amit Shah’s statement on President Droupadi Murmu during his Chaibasa rally on Saturday and demanded a defamation case be filed against the minister.
Addressing the Vijay Sankalp rally in Chaibasa, Shah said BJP picked a poor tribal sister for the president’s post and made her “mahamahim Droupadi Murmu”.
He said, “Aazadi ke sattar saal baad bhi ek bhi janjatiya vyakti is desh ke rashtrapati pad par aasin nahi hua tha. Humne aadivaasi ghar ki gareeb behan, Droupadi Murmu ko rashtrapati banakar mahaanmahim Droupadi Murmu banane ka kaam kia hai. Aur Modi ji ne Droupadi ji ko Rashtrapati banane k liye select karke, collegium me unko chunkar Bharat ke samvidhaan me ek naya itihaas lagaya hai. (Even after 70 years of the country’s independence, no one from the tribal community had adorned the post of the president. We picked a poor tribal sister, Droupadi Murmu, for the president’s post and made her honourable Droupadi Murmu. And Modi ji added a new history to the Constitution by picking Droupadi ji, making the collegium select her and the president of the country).”
