Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-headed government is set to unveil a new National Health Service (NHS) care package. The development comes as the government is planning to move patients stuck in hospital to care homes, according to reports.

UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay is all set to make an announcement regarding the changes. However, total amount of cash for the initiative is yet to be finalised.

Meanwhile, union leaders are likely to meet the Health Secretary on Monday. This comes even as several union leaders have claimed that the government had ignored their proposals to sit down for talks.

So far, many more strikes have been announced by unions.

NHS Care Package

According to reports, the government may spend millions of pounds along with the £500 million allocation for social care announced in the autumn statement.

The plan is likely to include buying up to 2,000 care home beds in facilities approved by Care Quality Commission, according to reports.

The government is aiming to reduce burden on NHS and waiting times for ambulances. Currently there are around 13,000 patients stuck in NHS hospitals.

New symptoms

With the rise of new variants, the symptoms of COVID have also evolved. Initially, the NHS (National Health service) regarded a fever, cough, and loss or change in sense of smell or taste as the main symptoms which could indicate COVID infection. Now, recently updated NHS guidance suggests also looking out for symptoms including a sore throat, blocked or runny nose, and a headache.

There have been strikes by NHS workers and nurses. Juniors doctors may join the protest in March.

The bone of contention remains the public sector salaries. While the Health Secretary will meet union leaders on Monday but the government wants pay negotiations for 2023-24, according to a Sky report.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) head Pat Cullen has requested ministers to meet nurses for 19 per cent pay rise, effective for this financial year.

However, PM Sunak has hinted that discussion will be only for 2023-24 salaries.
