Guwahati: With the rising number of vehicles in Guwahati, traffic congestion has become a regular scene with hardly any rules actually being followed.
To deal with this problem, a time card system, which was supposed to be implemented at least two years ago, will be introduced in the city, a senior traffic official said.
A time card for buses is a system to monitor the movement of the city buses to ensure that they move in a regulated manner. The authorities schedule a particular time for each bus, which means that the buses have a scheduled start time, waiting time and an end-stop time. Violating the rule may attract hefty fines on the buses.
The senior Guwahati traffic police official said a meeting has already been held with the district administration, police and transport department over the issue. The official informed that the deputy commissioner will now personally monitor the issue.
He said a massive campaign will be launched in the coming days to ensure that this time the time card system is followed by the buses running inside the city limits. A constant monitor on these buses will be initiated to ensure that none create any traffic congestion, the official said.
The traffic official said the programme to implement the system would start in a month. Guwahati has at least 600 city buses plying on the roads each day on 20 routes. Proper management of these buses running in the city will ensure the smooth movement of vehicles in Guwahati.
