Weather dept sounds ‘orange alert’ for Sunday
Ludhiana: A day after the city recorded the coldest day in January in more than nine years, the meteorological department sounded the red alert for severe cold on Saturday. The department has predicted cold day to severe cold day on Sunday and sounded the orange alert.
Maximum (day) temperature in Ludhiana on Saturday was recorded at 14.6 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees below normal but 5.4 degrees more than a day before.
On Friday, Ludhiana recorded the coldest day in January since 2013 (when day temperature was recorded at 8.5 degrees Celsius). Day temperature was recorded at 9.2 derees Celsius on Friday.
Meanwhile, minimum (night) temperature in Ludhiana on Saturday was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius, 0.9 degrees more than normal and 1.7 degrees more than a day before. On December 18, 2022 Ludhiana witnessed lowest night temperature at 3.8 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, morning fog reduced visibility to 500 metres at 8.30am on Saturday. It increased to 1,000 metres by 11.30 am and 1,500 metres by 2.30 pm. However, haze and mist remained present. At 5.30pm, mist reduced visibility to 1,000 metres.
The meteorological department has predicted similar conditions for at least a day.
The orange alert for Sunday means that the city is likely to experience cold day to severe cold day and dense to very dense fog. Dense to very dense fog might prevail in the city on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, residents struggled to keep warm on a chilly Saturday. Davinder Singh, a city resident also said that it was dangerous to drive in the fog, especially in the morning.
