Virudhunagar: The Virudhunagar district police arrested four people and foiled an attempt to circulate counterfeit currency notes. Police also seized 4.8 lakh counterfeit currency from them.
The accused have been identified as Subbuthai, 50, a resident of Vendurayapuram near Sivakasi, her daughter Duraiselvi, 26, son-in-law Balamurugan, 30, and another person Arunkumar.
According to police sources, Panjavarnam, 46, was selling fruits near the Virudhunagar old bus stand. On Friday night, Subbuthai came to her shop and gave 500 denomination currency to Panjavarnam. Panjavarnam, who suspected that it was a counterfeit currency, alerted the Virudhunagar West police.
Police rushed to the spot and after examining the currency, they found that it was counterfeit.
After conducting an inquiry with Subbuthai, police conducted a search at her house and seized 54,500 counterfeit currency notes.
Police also conducted an inquiry with Duraiselvi and her husband Balamurugan and came to know that another person Arunkumar who was running a readymade shop at Sivakasi was also in possession of counterfeit currency. Based on the information, police conducted a search at the shop and his relatives’ places and seized 4.25 lakh counterfeit currency.
Police are conducting further investigations on how they obtained the counterfeit currency and where it was printed.
