MUMBAI: A 19-year-old youth was arrested by Malad police for attempted murder after he grievously assaulted his 20-year-old classmate with a sickle for interfering in his relationship with a girl in their batch. The victim has been hospitalised with head injuries and was administered stitches. All three are final-year BA students at a college in the western suburbs.
According to the victim, the accused attacked him after inviting him to his house Friday to play with his pets.
The victim and the girl live in the same neighbourhood and have known each other for 6 years. The girl told him last month that she was in a relationship with another boy and didn't wish to be friends with him now.
'Made to wipe bloodstains off floor with shirt'In the case of a Malad youth stabbing his classmate in a feud over a girl, the victim spotted the girl with her boyfriend in college on January 2, following which he sent his old photographs with her to the boyfriend. This led to her boyfriend warning him to not interfere in the affair. Irked, the youth then called up the girl and threatened to disclose their friendship to her father if she cut ties with him.
Around 12.30pm on Friday, the accused, pretending that all was well, called the youth to college. Once there, he was told to follow him to his Malad flat on his bike. After spending time with the pets, the two reportedly began playing video games. When the youth was at the computer, he was attacked from behind.
In his statement, he said he was then dragged to the living room where the accused first attacked his legs with the sickle and a motorcycle guard. He was also struck on his arms and torso. All the while, the accused repeatedly warned him to keep off his relationship with the girl.
He further claimed that the accused made him take his shirt off and wipe bloodstains off the floor. He then gave the victim another shirt to wear and got him to ride pillion on his motorcycle. The victim reportedly jumped off the bike when it slowed down, and raised an alarm. While the accused fled, a passerby helped the injured youth get to a civic hospital. His family and police were informed and the accused was taken into custody. The victim said he had also spotted an iron rod with the accused.
Police did not disclose the identities of the youths given their age and lack of previous criminal history.
