Rare coral reef sea snake found on land rescued and released in sea
Cuddalore: A four-foot coral reef sea snake, which strayed on to land in Cuddalore town, was rescued and released into the sea by snake rescuer V Selvam alias Chellaa on Friday.
The banded sea snakes live on coral reefs in the eastern Indian and western Pacific ocean and the venom of this snake ranks among the most toxic in the world, said Chella.
He along with his aides went to Sonankuppam beach on Friday morning as a part of their turtle conservation project when he saw the reptile on the shore.
He decided to rescue and free the reptile
Generally, fishermen encounter these snakes only when the reptiles get entangled in their fishing nets.
Most fishermen abandon their nets in the sea once they see these snakes entangled in it. It is rare to see these creatures on the shore.
Despite living in the deep sea, these snakes come to backwaters to drink fresh water and a few lose their way and stray on shores.
