AHMEDABAD: Schools in the city have sought relaxation in the newly announced age criteria for admission to Class 1.
The school management association wrote a letter to the education minister in this regard.
In December, the state education department asked schools to admit students aged six as of June 1, 2023, to Class 1 for the next academic year. Till now, schools could admit students who were five years of age. The association has asked that the last date be extended to June 14 instead of June 1.
The association said that if the government relaxes the cut-off date, many children, who don't complete six years on June 1, will not have to wait one entire year to gain admissions. Sources said the government made the decision in 2020 but will implement the rule from the 2023-24 academic year.
Sources said a few days ago, the Ahmedabad city district education officer issued a circular to all the schools informing them that the rule will come into effect from next year.
The circular says only those students aged six as of June 1 will be admitted to Class 1.
The circular states that schools violating this rule will be answerable to the department.
