Assam Police moves Delhi to get woman, son out of Pak jail
Guwahati: The Assam Police has petitioned higher authorities, including New Delhi, for bringing back a 36-year-old Nagaon woman and her son languishing in a jail in Pakistan for more than a month now for illegally entering the neighbouring country, police said.
Nagaon SP Leena Doely said the husband of the woman, who was a resident of Nagaon, died two years ago and thereafter she sold off their property in November and left with a man she had met recently. “The man took her to Saudi Arabia on the pretext of marriage using fake documents and then to Pakistan. They were caught by the Pakistani Army while illegally crossing over from Afghanistan to Pakistan without any valid travel documents,” she added.
The SP said the matter came to light when the mother of the woman received a letter from a law firm in Pakistan informing her that they were lodged in a jail in Pakistan’s Balochistan.
“This was confirmed after the woman called up her mother in Nagaon using the phone of a jail staff. According to her mother, the woman was duped on the pretext of marriage and taken to Saudi Arabia and then to Pakistan. A case has been registered on the basis of the complaint of her mother and communications have been made with the higher authorities to bring the woman and her child back to Assam,” she added. The SP said the man, who took the woman and her son, was also arrested and lodged in jail.
Meanwhile, the Delhi HC on Friday refused to entertain a petition filed by the mother of the woman seeking directions to the Pakistani government to produce her daughter and grandson here. A bench headed by Justice Siddharth Mridul, who was hearing the petition, observed that the court has no authority over the authorities in the neighbouring country.
