BENGALURU: A 29-year-old construction worker has been arrested in Darjeeling for allegedly murdering a mason at Prakruthi Layout near Yelahanka on December 18.
The accused is Priyonath, who stayed in the labourers' shed in the layout and from West Bengal. The victim was Ainak Haque, a resident of Channasandra, near Whitefield, also from West Bengal. Police said Haque had completed his degree in Bengaluru and started taking contracts for plastering work. He got labourers from West Bengal for a contract he had taken up for a residential building belonging to Narayanaswamy.
On December 18, Haque came to the shed to pay wages to the workers. Priyonath demanded that Haque clear all his dues, which led to a fight. Priyonath allegedly hit Haque on the head with an iron rod before fleeing from the spot. Haque sustained severe head injuries and succumbed in a hospital on December 19.
Deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Anoop A Shetty formed a special team headed by inspector B Govindaraju to trace the accused. The team learnt he had fled to Darjeeling and arrested him there on December 30.
