2 held in Jaipur for blackmailing & extorting Rs 26 lakh from businessman

JAIPUR: Taking a leaf out of web series and Bollywood potboilers, a woman and a man extorted Rs 26 lakh from a leading businessman by sending him letters that threatened to leak details of his private life.
Jaipur police on Friday arrested Rahul Bohra (26), a resident of Jhotwara, and Priyanka (27), a resident of Kardhani.
DCP (West) Vandita Rana said the businessman had on Sunday filed an FIR at Murlipura police station wherein he alleged that his security guard had handed him over a letter.
She said the businessman was scared because the letter contained some details of his personal life. The accused threatened to share these details and demanded Rs 11 lakh.
ACP (Chomu) Rajendra Singh said the businessman followed the instructions and left a bag with Rs 11 lakh under a tree in Vidhyadhar Nagar.
Singh said that the victim continued to be blackmailed by the accused and gave another sum of Rs 15 lakh in the same manner.
According to Murlipura SHO Ramesh Saini, the two accused sent another letter to the victim last month. “This time the accused asked the businessman to cough up Rs 23 lakh. He decided to break the silence and file FIR,” he said.
Saini said police examined the case and accordingly planned to arrest the accused red-handed. The businessman was sent to the same location under the tree to drop cash. But this time, scrap papers were filled in the bag.
“When the accused arrived to take the bag, we arrested him,” Saini said.
Saini said Bohra is a student of charted accountancy, while Priyanka had been working for a long time in the businessman’s company.
“There is a likelihood that Bohra being a student of accounts had unearthed some important information about the businessman and his company through Priyanka. Both began blackmailing the businessman,” he said.
