Four killed as wild elephant goes on rampage in Odisha's Angul
According to forest officials, the first three were trampled to death by the wild elephant on the spot.
ANGUL: A wild elephant that entered Angul Forest range went on a rampage and killed four people in separate incidents at four villages on Saturday morning creating panic among locals in Angul district.
The deceased were identified as Subash Biswal (60) of Chheliapada village, Anirudhha Sahoo of Angarabandha, Ramesh Swain(55) of Barasingha village and Ajay Biswal of Santiri,(55) village. The villages are located close to each other inside Angul Forest range and under Banarpal police station.
According to forest officials, the first three were trampled to death by the wild elephant on the spot and the fourth one Ajay Samal succumbed while being taken to Angul hospital in a critical condition for treatment. The incident has created palpable panic in the entire district where elephants have been creating panic all along.
Angul Divisional Forest officer Vivek Kumar said, "There was an elephant herd at Mandaragiri last night. One of the elephants deserted the herd and entered into residential villages in the early morning. It had an encounter with four villagers whom it killed."
The DFO said that the elephant first killed Subash Biswal who had gone to the outskirts of the village early morning. Then the elephant went into nearby Angarabandha village where it killed Anirudhha Sahoo. The elephant trampled him to death while he was working in his garden. The same elephant went to Barasingha village and killed Ramesh Swain who had gone to a nearby forest to attend the call of nature .
Lastly, the elephant had a face to face with Ajay Samal of village Santiri whom it injured seriously. Samal died while being rushed to hospital.
The DFO said efforts are on to chase the elephant to Dhenkanal district where it had come. An ex-gratia of rupees of four lakhs to each family would be paid, the DFO said.
